Sclerotherapy is a procedure to treat unsightly veins that appear on the surface of your skin. A gentle sclerosing solution is injected into the vein, causing it to collapse, close and disappear from view.
In some cases, a light-based therapy such as intense-pulsed light can also remove unwanted veins or broken capillaries that are visible on the surface of your skin.
Who Is a Candidate for Sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy is chosen by women and men who are concerned about spider veins and varicose veins that have appeared on their bodies. These veins are often caused by:
- Hormonal shifts
- Weight gain
- Prolonged sitting or standing
How Sclerotherapy Works
We will first examine your legs, veins or areas of concern. We may also ask you about related symptoms such as swelling, sores, or changes on your skin. A check for venous reflux disease may also be necessary (a condition caused by dysfunction of valves in the vascular system).
Sclerotherapy is an outpatient procedure that requires no anesthesia. The skin is cleansed before the doctor performs injections into the unwanted spider or varicose veins. One injection is typically needed for every inch of vein, with as many as 40 injections performed each session. For best results, you may be advised to undergo 2 or more sessions at 1-month intervals. Sclerotherapy does not prevent future veins from appearing.
At the end of your procedure, a compression tape and cotton balls are applied over the treated areas. You may need to wear a tight-fitting support hose for 72 hours or more after sclerotherapy. It is normal to experience some cramping, redness or bruising for several days. While your activities will be limited, walking and light exercise is often encouraged. Follow the providers post-operative instructions carefully.
Possible adverse events with this procedure include formation of blood clots, inflammation, allergic reaction and skin injury which leaves a small but permanent scar.
